People living with HIV, sex workers, men who have sex with men, and people who inject drugs should be targeted in a positive way, helping them to avoid HIV infection, and not have their human rights abused. There is a need to look to Asian Governments to amend outdated laws criminalizing the most vulnerable sections of society, and take all the measures needed to ensure they live with dignity and have their human rights protected.
Asian countries can avert massive increases in infections and death, prevent economic losses, and save millions of people from poverty if they deal with the human rights barriers to health promotion. Such leadership is critical in Asia today. But businesses also have a role to play in ensuring that there is no discrimination in the workplace, promoting diversity and respect and protecting their own staff from infection through education and awareness campaigns.
